Step into the serene expanse of the Agdal Gardens, a historic sanctuary of greenery and reflection nestled just beyond Marrakech’s royal walls. Known locally as Aguedal, this vast network of orchards and gardens dates back to the 12th century, originally established by the Almohad dynasty.
Spread over hundreds of hectares, the Agdal Gardens feature orderly groves of olive, orange, and pomegranate trees, nourished by an ingenious irrigation system that channels water from the Atlas Mountains. At its heart lies a large reflecting pool, once used to water royal orchards and even to train palace troops in swimming.
Still partially used by the Moroccan royal family, this UNESCO-listed cultural landscape offers visitors a rare chance to experience centuries-old Islamic garden design, where geometry, water, and nature converge in quiet harmony.
Whether you’re strolling along tree-lined paths or pausing beside tranquil water basins, Agdal offers a powerful contrast to the medina’s energy—a living reminder of Marrakech’s royal and agricultural past.
